The Example of Jesus: Why a Hot Meal Makes a Lasting Difference for Survivors

One of our favorite stories in Scripture is when Jesus fed the 5,000. As you read through the narrative we’ve adapted below, notice how Jesus went above and beyond in His provision. He didn’t just provide the bare minimum people needed for survival. He multiplied the meal so that the food was abundant—so that everyone’s plates were overflowing:

On a grassy hillside, the crowd listened as the Teacher spoke. His words were kind, loving - set apart from anything the people had ever heard before. Hours passed, but no one wanted to leave.

As evening approached, the Teacher’s disciples grew concerned.

“This is a remote place,” they said to him. “Send the people to the village so they can buy food.”

But the Teacher answered calmly, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

“We only have five loaves of bread and two fish,” they replied. It was barely enough to nourish a family, let alone feed a massive crowd.

The disciples brought the food to the Teacher. When he looked up to heaven, broke the bread into pieces, and gave thanks, the air stilled.

The people watched - some expectant, some doubting.

Pieces of bread and fish moved from the Teacher’s hands to the disciples, who began serving the crowd.

“Surely the food will run out,” many thought.

Yet bread and fish continued to pass hand by hand throughout the gathered mass of men, women, and children.

Everyone ate. The loaves and fishes had multiplied into more than enough to satisfy, with leftovers remaining!

As the pangs of hunger ceased, the truth of the miracle settled over the crowd. It lifted the weariness from their hearts. They were filled with hope.

They knew they had received something far more than a meal.

It was love.

And the Teacher smiled.

The Gift of Abundance

Hunger is a basic human need, and Jesus understood this. When the crowds gathered to follow him, he met their hunger with abundance.

Instead of offering a token bite, Jesus fed the people until they were satisfied, with twelve baskets of leftovers remaining!

This story is a beautiful reminder that when God provides, the plate is not just filled; it overflows.

Faith is a core pillar of the work we do here at The Landing. Our mission is to serve survivors of human trafficking using a trauma-informed, Christ-centered approach. That’s why we’re passionate about getting churches involved in our mission, living out the instruction from Matthew 25:35:

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.”

The churches (and organizations) who partner with us participate in the work of active compassion, meeting basic needs in order to show the love of Christ to every survivor who comes through our doors.

How Your Church Can Help

Every day our Drop-In Center is open, survivors arrive hungry, exhausted, and unsure of what comes next. Almost every person who walks through our doors asks for the same thing first: a hot meal.

For survivors, wrapping their hands around a plate of hot food means more than just nourishment. It communicates comfort, dignity, and often the first sign that someone truly cares.

At our Drop-In Center, we offer meals every day we’re open. Some days that means simple, heat-and-serve options, so no one goes without. But when a church or business steps in to prepare and serve a fresh, hot meal, something changes.

The room softens.

Conversations begin.

Trust starts to grow.

Our vision for 2026 is simple and deeply human: to offer a hot, home-cooked (or catered) meal every day our Drop-In Center is open, especially on our busiest days when the need is greatest.

Here is how that vision becomes reality: if just 16 churches, businesses, or organizations committed to serving one day a month, every survivor who walks through our doors could count on a hot meal and a welcoming table where there is always more than enough!

The Practical Significance of Food

In the story of the loaves and fishes, we see Jesus touching hearts and transforming lives by prioritizing people’s physical needs. We know firsthand that providing essential resources is a crucial first step when we are helping people work toward hope and healing.

Experiencing food insecurity is linked to survival sex and commercial sexual exploitation.

Individuals who lack essentials such as food and shelter become vulnerable to traffickers who offer employment and basic needs as recruitment tactics. When a person does not know where their next meal will come from, a meal, a place to stay, or a promised job can feel like rescue, but prove to be a trap.

Around the tables at The Landing, there are no hidden agendas – just nourishment, dignity, and compassion.

Each meal served is an invitation into a community of care, where everyone has a place, and no one goes hungry. When churches partner with us and volunteer to provide meals, survivors can meet essential needs in a safe, supportive space—surrounded by people who care for them without strings attached.
